Identifying your unique selling proposition or point (USP) is important for business because it differentiates you from your competitors, it gives you a competitive advantage that helps attract and retain customers.
Having a clear USP provides a focus for marketing, builds brand loyalty, and can even make it easier to get funding or investment when you’re looking to scale your business.
Showcasing your strengths articulates why customers should choose you over others by highlighting a unique benefit of supporting your business, such as superior quality, faster delivery, or a better customer experience.
Six reasons why having a unique selling point is an advantage in business:
✨Provides a competitive advantage: In a crowded market, a USP is what makes your business stand out and gives customers a clear reason to choose you over your rivals, making you less reliant on competing on price alone.
✨Attracts and retains customers: A strong USP gives customers a compelling reason to buy from you initially and provides them with a unique benefit to remain loyal to your brand over time.
✨Improves brand recognition: A good USP makes your brand more memorable and helps customers associate it with a specific benefit or quality.
✨Focuses marketing efforts: It provides a clear and consistent message that can be used in advertising and marketing campaigns to effectively communicate your value.
✨Builds internal purpose: A clear USP can motivate staff by providing a shared purpose and identity for the company.
✨Differentiates you from competitors: A USP is the distinct combination of skills, experiences, and qualities that sets you apart, whether it’s superior quality, innovative service, or a specific customer experience.
Some of our clients have asked ‘How to find their USP’ so today we share four steps we use in our The Glowgetter Mentor community.
Four steps to identifying your USP:
Focus on your customers ~
Ask your customers what they want.
✨Understand your customers and the market~ Look at their reviews, conduct polls, and interview customers to understand their pain points, motivations, and what they value most.
✨Analyze your competitors ~ Research what your competitors are doing and saying. This helps identify potential market gaps and what you can offer that your competitors are not.
For example, in our salons we were offering advanced facials and included in the treatment was a massage and treatment to the neck and decollate.
Yes the treatment was more expensive, but we also offered so much more than just a skin treatment.
We had listened to our clients wants and needs, we noticed a gap in the market because our competitors didn’t include these extras, adding value was one of our strengths as unique selling points.
Highlight your strengths -
Start by identify your unique strengths that your business offers
✨List your differentiators ~ Brainstorm everything that makes your business, product, and services stand out. This could be superior quality, a unique feature, better customer service, or a specific niche you serve.
✨Focus on what cannot be easily copied ~ Think about aspects that are specific to your business and hard for competitors to imitate.
For example the types of advanced facials we offered were created by our founder and visionary, so these couldn’t easily be replicated by our competitors.
✨Consider industry trends ~ Ensure your unique strengths align with current market trends to stay relevant. I always say… the KEY to success is to Keep Educating Yourself.
Position your business in contrast to your competitors ~
✨Spotlight what sets you apart from your competitors ~ Analyse your customer’s needs and your competitor’s offerings to find a gap in the market.
Then identify what makes your product or service different and position it to highlight this specific value.
Clarify your USP craft a clear and concise statement that communicates this benefit to your target audience.
Root it in your business values~
Create and test your USP statement, this one-liner ensures your business becomes the ‘go to’ for this product or service.
✨Develop a concise statement: Create a short, clear phrase that communicates your unique benefit.
An example is: "[Your brand] offers [product/service] for [target market] who want [value proposition] unlike [the alternative] because [key differentiator],"
✨Test and refine: Test different versions of your USP with customers to see which one resonates most and clearly communicates your value. The clearer it is for your clients to relate and identify with your USP the easier it will be for them to share and recommend your business.
