37. Skin Science - Age Reverse

Whilst being in lockdown, I've taken the opportunity to brush up on my skin science knowledge and to use the time to renew my Dermalogica 'Expert Status' for continued professional development. The expert classes are a three hour intensive workshop and our last session was about ways to improve ageing. In an Age Smart treatment the aim is to treat, repair, and prevent ageing through many factors such as skincare, lifestyle advice, and professional treatments.


Earlier this year, I had a client in who had gone with a friend to a facelift consultation with the top Harley Street surgeon. She came back with an unexpected response and experience - the surgeon told her friend that she needed to take care of 'the canvas' before having a facelift. He said that a facelift won't treat the condition of her (leathery) skin, that it was essential she have a chemical peel and look after her skin before she goes under the knife. This supports Dermalogica's motto 'Skincare is not a luxury, it's part of daily health - like brushing your teeth!'

The skin starts to age at 21 and every decade the cell renewal process slows down further. For example, in your 20's skin cell turnover happens about every 20 days, in your 30's every 30 days, and so on. Then after thirty, the skin's collagen production decreases by 1% which means that dead skin cells stick together for longer and the skin becomes coarser and then extrinsic factors further deplete the collagen levels with other factors such as smoking, sugar consumption and ultraviolet rays.


It is important to look after your skin at all ages because it's the largest organ in your body and one of its main functions is to protect you!

Such a simple message... ‘take care of the canvas’. For me, it’s so easy to forget that our skin is an organ. Thankfully tanning is no longer fashionable! This is from the skin cancer.org website... Good to share awareness hey. Protect yourself & look great - Avoid tanning entirely: It’s the best way to safeguard against unhealthy, unsightly skin damage. Fake, don’t bake: If you want a golden glow, consider sunless tanning products. There are many options that can give you a bronzed look, but you still need sun protection! Tone, don’t tan: Get radiant skin by doing aerobic or high-intensity exercises. Working out feels good and boosts your mood. Hydrate, eat great: Drink lots of water and choose whole, unprocessed foods’
