60. Therapist Thursday- Conversations with a Skin Expert: Back Acne

Updated: Mar 21

Have you heard of CrossFit? A few friends were into it, but I never really knew much about it. After having gained 20lbs in the first lockdown and realising loosing it was a little more difficult than it had been when I was younger, we joined the local Crossfit gym called CrossFit Solent. It's an AWESOME all over body workout. One thing I have noticed though is that several athletes suffer with back acne.

I have had several teenage clients in the past whom I've treated and helped improve and clear their backne. I've noticed it is a concern for professional and other athletes, so I thought I would share a few tips on how to help prevent and clear future breakouts.

If you suffer from breakouts on your back also known as back acne or backne, having a monthly back facial will help to purify breakout-prone skin. This treatment helps to relax the muscles, extract blackheads and comedones, and combat breakouts.

Using Dermalogica's Active Clearing range helps to calm irritation, but control acne without compromising the skin's integrity with ingredients like licorice to aid sebum regulation and soothe inflammation.

The dual exfoliation process combines lactic & salicylic acids which gently detach surface cells and stimulate cell renewal with bromelain & papain to digest dead skin cells leaving the skin smooth and refined.

In a professional treatment, after the extractions are performed, a deep-cleansing clay masque will help to purify the skin and absorb excess oil with bentonite and kaolin which will refine pores and clear congestion. If you're using this masque at home, I would advise you have a friend, spouse or family member help apply and use the size of a 50p coin. Leave the masque on for 10-15 minutes and shower off.

Follow with a bacteria reducing and oil controlling treatment serum such as the overnight clearing gel. If you can ask a second favour of your at home back facial partner... ask them to apply the age bright spot fader to each spot so that the spots heal faster and prevent the post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Using products that are specially designed for acne addresses the four main contributors- overactive sebaceous glands, cell accumulation, bacteria and inflammation.

Professional treatments help with extractions and treat the deeper layers of the skin. By having a regular back purification treatment the area that's hard to reach will be cleansed, polished, hydrated and refreshed! A course of 4 - 6 professional treatments is recommended and a follow on monthly maintenance program to help prevent and fight the breakout activity.

Along side professional treatments, home care is essential to treating and preventing back acne. It takes a daily home care regime to combat the triggers and bacteria produced from sweat and overactive sebaceous glands.
