21. Three tips for the best shave

Updated: Mar 21

Two of the four top Men's skincare concerns include pseudofolliculitis barber and razor burn. Razor burn often affects those with sensitive skin due to over exfoliation from frequent shaving. It can cause redness, stinging and a burning sensation on the skin. Pseudofolliculitis barb is found along the neck and jawline and is often more prominent in Afro-Caribbean skins. Only men suffer from this shaving contra-action because it is caused by dark terminal hair growth that create more intense and severe ingrown. Keloid scarring can result in these areas from the increase in collagen production from ingrown hairs. Regular exfoliation and softening the hair before shaving can help reduce and prevent these concerns.

Three Tips to achieve your best shave:

Deep clean the skin with an oil based cleanser followed by a foaming cleanser to help eliminate bacteria and get rid of excess oil and product reside on the skin. Dermalogica's precleanse removes oils without clogging pores, while essential fatty acids condition and nourish skin. Using an oil based cleanser helps to soften the hair and enables your prescribed Dermalogica Cleanser to work more efficiently. Use a foaming cleanser like Special Cleansing Gel as the second cleanse or for oiler skins as the shaving medium for a closer and smoother shave.

Shaving dry and keeping the beard area trimmed can help prevent ingrown hairs, but if you're a fan of a wet shave then choosing the right shave product is crucial. The second cleansing phase of preparation can also be used as the shaving medium to save on time.

For oilier skins a gel foam will help to lift the hairs and for more sensitised skins a cream cleanser will nourish the skin while helping the razor to glide easier. Special Cleansing Gel creates a refreshing lather to remove impurities while Balm Mint and Lavender extracts soothe the skin.

For drier or more sensitised skins a cream cleanser like Intensive Moisture Cleanser is an emollient, lipid-enriched formula that cleanses skin while helping to minimise damage of vital proteins and lipids that defend against dryness. Invigorating extracts of Citrus, Palmarosa and Jasmine refresh tired skin. After your shave the product rinses away easily, leaving skin cleaner, softer and more luminous.

Many after shave products contain alcohol and fragrance that can sting and dry out the skin. It is important to use a calming and restoring product that helps to replenish the skin barrier function. A normal moisturiser like Skin Smoothing Cream infused with an Active HydraMesh Technology™ gives the skin 48 hours of continuous hydration and helps protect against environmental stress.
