Reduce • Reuse • Recycle
Words we so often hear, but how can we help do our part?
Use reusable bags when shopping
Leave the car at home, ride a bike or walk more if it's local and if your destination is further away then share a lift or take the train.
Donate unwanted items to charity
Up-cycle furniture or hand down unwanted or unused household items
Recycle as much as possible
Reuse coffee cups and bottles of water
Put another layer of clothing on or a blanket rather than cranking up the heat
Compost raw fruit and vegetables
Reuse old jars for storage or homemade sauces
Use products that are biodegradable
I'm sure you can think of many more ways to help the planet, this is just a list of 10 that I could think of off the top of my head. Did you notice our environment during lockdown last year? How nature repaired itself, how clear the water was and how fresh the air was? It made me refocus on how I could make our home and work environment more eco-friendly. Those of you who are regular clients may have noticed how we've tried to reduce waste with our consumable items such as personal protective equipment and disposable items.
Recycle - all packaging now has the symbol ♻️ to tell us if it can be recycled - paper, plastic, aluminium, glass. All of our Dermalogica products and packaging are recyclable, even the new Clear Start packaging is now made from 25% recycled plastic. When formulating Aurum D a natural product one of our main concern was to be sustainable and environmentally friendly, so all of our packaging is recyclable and reusable.
Reuse - whether its up-cycling furniture, donating clothing or creating less waste by reusing a bag or jar, every little helps. We’ve had cotton discs crocheted by the very talented Dawn Guilbert so we can wash and reuse them in our treatments rather than go through individual use cotton wool for each client. We also only use linens for our clients so that there isn't any additional waste created by single use items. We also have had all of our personal protective equipment made by Dawn so that we can wear a fresh apron and face masque for each appointment.
Reduce - our plastic bags are no more, we use recycled paper bags and tissue paper for our client's purchases and clients are offered the choice of using a bag or reusing their own. We stopped using couch roll for each client a few years ago to cut back on waste. Waxing clients now use a wipeable and reusable plastic sheet and all other treatments use a white single cotton sheet for each treatment. This has cut back on 1000’s of cotton discs and 100’s of rolls of couch roll being used each year. We use steam towels for each client instead of paper towel to cleanse hands and feet before each treatment. Our drinks are offered in a glass rather than paper to reduce waste and treats offered on China crockery rather than disposable paper.
We are always open to trying new methods and ideas, so if you have any more ideas of how we can be a more green salon, please let us know.
